With globalization entering the Indian subcontinent, the CPA qualification has gained popularity in India.

Indian companies that are publicly listed in the United States require CPA professionals who can comply with the U.S. financial and auditing standards.

The CPA exam traditionally requires five years of education in accounting and business courses. In the Indian system, this is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. Recent changes in the eligibility criteria have made it difficult for candidates of Indian origin to pursue the exam. For instance, a bachelor’s degree along with a CA qualification is not accepted in some U.S. states. In the past though, the combined education was considered equivalent to regular four-year bachelor program in the U.S.

However, there have been encouraging changes as well.

One such was the new CPA exam centres made accessible for Indian aspirants.

The Prometric tests for the CPA exam were earlier conducted in a few countries. Even though the tests are online, they required the Indian candidates to take the exam from the U.S.

However, there has been a steady increase in the number of Indian applicants in recent years. This compelled the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) to allow Indian candidates to take the CPA exam from the Middle East Prometric centres. Indian candidates can appear for the CPA exam in Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

The costs incurred by Indian candidates certainly are higher than if they pursued a CA qualification. However, a CPA qualification can be earned in relatively fewer years. In addition, the career opportunities that a CPA qualification offers are grand and promising.

Today, it is far easier to clear the CPA exam than the CA exam. Learn about the differences between CA and CPA to decide which direction you would like to take.
