Story

In 1973, the Market Technicians Association (MTA) was set up as a not-for-profit.

Their mission was to oversee the education and certification of technical analysts in the global financial industry.

At the time, technical analysis was still an upcoming profession. The full-fledged acceptance came with the use of computers for analysis. Since then, the prestige of the profession has only grown.

In 1989, the MTA awarded the first Chartered Market Technician (CMT) exam.

Today, the MTA has more than 4,500 proud members in 85 countries. It is also the most eminent organization conferring financial market technicians.

CMT Certification

Clearing the CMT exam certifies that the candidate has earned the following:

  • Knowledge and technical skills of analysis and the ability to do research
  • Can recommend investment programs and trades from the financial markets and instruments
  • Can be a signatory to a research report
  • Can trade their accounts with proficiency whenever the opportunity presents

CMT Exam

At its core, the CMT exam tests the candidate’s ability to comprehend a chart.

They understand the chart from different price perspectives including its past and what it can look like in the future. The charts can be point and figure, candlestick, and line charts.

The candidates also draw relationships between the prices, the trends they indicate, illustrating these trends, and predict their future.

In addition, the candidates get the opportunity to calculate and work with inferential statistics, put/call ratios, implied volatilities, correlation analysis, regression analysis and t-tests. They also develop proficiency in inter-market analysis, short selling, volume, breadth and sentiment gauges.

The depth of the technical and analytical skills tested in the CMT exam prepares the candidate to work with the ever-changing financial markets.

CMT Exam Structure

The exam has three levels: Level I, Level II and Level III

Candidates must clear all three levels to receive the CMT credential.

The exams are scheduled twice a year—April and October.

However, candidates can take only one exam at a time. This means the candidates will require at least one full-year cycle (April to April or October to October) to pass all three levels.
